We had a
lovely day touring around the Atherton Tablelands. This is such a beautiful
area with gourmet foods and stunning scenery everywhere. First we returned to
the Mareeba Tourist Information Centre. We didn’t need any more information but
I wanted to visit the historic heritage museum behind the Information Centre.
We couldn’t believe that once again entry was free. The exhibits and displays
were of a very high quality and there were many buildings. Everything there was
thanks to the generosity of the locals. There were many buildings, all transported
to the area and full of different artefacts. I was quite interested in a large
building that contained a lot of information about the tobacco industry that was
so big here many years ago. Rob may not have been quite so interested but he
was happy to wait for me at the Heritage coffee shop. From
here we drove onto Atherton and visited the Hou Wang Chinese Temple and Museum.
The temple had been donated to the national trust and was all that was left of
Chinatown. It was most unusual for a Chinese Temple being constructed of timber
and corrugated iron. It had been meticulously restored and we had a very
enthusiastic guide who told us of the temple’s history and also the surrounding
area. We continued on and visited the quaint little town of Yungaburra and then
headed out to an Avenue of Honour, for the Australian soldiers who lost their
lives in Afghanistan. It was really well done and in a beautiful position on
the banks of Lake Tinaroo.
