Rob has always
wanted to visit a Sugar Mill and although we’ve been up this way in the past we’ve
not been here at the right time to do a tour. There are only a couple of Mills
that allow tours and luckily for us Tully was one of those mills. We thoroughly
enjoyed the tour and certainly learnt quite a lot of information during the
tour. We were surprised how close we were allowed to get to see everything. Environmentally,
the mill does a pretty good job with all of the waste from the process. The
waste is used in the mill to produce electricity and heat. They produce so much
electricity that a lot is put back into the grid. Other waste is collected and
given back to the farmers as it is like a fertilized top-soil. They produce
more water than they use and it’s nearly all steam that billows from the
chimneys. All of the Tully sugar is exported overseas as brown sugar. After the
tour we had lunch in Tully before heading back to Mission Beach to check out
some of the shops. We drove south to a place called Lugger Bay and did a
beautiful walk along a rainforest track that hugged the coastline.
