Most of
today was spent driving with a few highlights thrown in. One of the highlights
was our lunch stop. We called into the 5 Mile Creek Swimming Hole, just south
of Cardwell. We virtually had the place to ourselves. It was a beautiful, well
grassed picnic area with many tables and seats. The swimming hole was a deep
fresh water, spring fed creek. The water was deep, clean and crystal clear. If
had been a couple of degrees warmer I would have had to have a swim. Instead we
watched the fresh water turtles, cat-fish, eels and other fish swimming around
and feeding. Reluctantly we left and headed for our next stop, at South Mission
Beach. We hadn’t visited this area before so we were looking forward to our stay.
On the way to the Dunk Island View Caravan Park we were stopped for a short
time due to smoke from burning off operations on the side of the road. We could
actually feel the heat as we passed the area. After settling in at the park which is right on the ocean
front and has great views of Dunk Island of course, we went for a drive along
the coast. The beach here is beautiful and it is safe for swimming. Parts of
the coastline are world heritage listed….. ”where the forest meets the sea”.
