We left
Mackay reasonably early and made our way to Bowen. Along the way we crossed
many cane train crossings and as it is crushing time, we were told on the radio
to use our “Cane Train Brain” when approaching the crossings. We arrived in
Bowen before lunch and set up, did some washing and then headed out. It is
pretty windy here and all up the coast north of Brisbane so kayaking was not
going to be an option unless we find a very sheltered spot. We drove to the
Catalina Interpretive Centre as Bowen was a catalina base during WW2. We then
walked out to the end of the jetty and also a walk along the seafront. From
here we drove to the magnificent lookout that gave us great views of the sea
and the Bowen area. There are many wonderful wall murals around Bowen and we
finished the afternoon by visiting the huge painted water tanks that overlook
Bowen.
