We made good
time today arriving in Mackay well before lunch. We settled in to our very
up-market caravan park (it has 2 pools, a water-park, jumping castle and a
wetlands) and then went for a drive to check out the town. We drove down to the
harbour, passing the Harbour Beach and the Mackay Surf Lifesaving club on our
way to the east point. This was a 4 wheel drive track and Rob enjoyed driving
through the sand as well as tackling the hills. The scenery of the coast was
pretty spectacular too. We could see many, many large coal ships out to sea,
waiting to collect coal form the huge coal loading facility to the south, at
Hay Point. From here we drove to the Marina where we were able to drive out on
the break-water for more great views. We then drove back to the main business district
of Mackay, stopped for lunch at a lovely café before going for a walk to
explore some of the riverfront and the beautifully restored buildings including
many from the art-deco period. Following this we visited the Mackay Botanic Gardens
which were relatively new only being opened in 2003. Rob was very happy because
he found his favourite palm and we found out its name was the “Bismarck Palm”.
