We decide to
go for a drive and circumnavigate Lake Wivenhoe. It was a lovely drive and we
were able to once again witness the affects the drought is having out here. The
Lake is only at 55% capacity and many of the creeks and rivers that drain into
it were dry. We saw the dam wall that had been built in the 1980s on the Brisbane
River to provide reliable drinking water and prevent floods. We called into the
village of Esk during our drive and visited a café/art gallery that was very
well patronised. Returning to the van, I
was looking forward to going out kayaking as the water was like glass and
although overcast, there was no wind. Just as I was about to hop into the kayak
a squall came in with both wind and rain so I abandoned the idea for a while.
The wind continued for about an hour and then we decided to take the kayak out
of the water and put it on the car as it seemed that conditions were not going
to change. By the time we had cleaned the kayak and put it on the car the wind
had abated and it was dead calm! Anyway I decided to try out the oven and bake
a banana cake instead while Rob went walking. We spent the rest of the
afternoon watching the cute kangaroos, many with joeys in their pouches,
feeding in the bush around the van and the lake.
