We had a bit
of a lazy morning as we didn’t have to be anywhere at any time in particular. I
had done some research and decided that I really wanted to visit a stately old
home that is very famous in the area called Abercrombie House. Rob wasn’t that
interested in visiting and again had a few jobs to do so he dropped me off and
returned to the centre of town. Abercrombie house was built in the 1870’s as
the family home for James Stewart who was the son of William Stewart. William
Stewart came to Australia in 1825 and was Lieutenant Governor General of Australia.
He was given a large area of land out from Bathurst and built a home here using
convict labour. Later his son built the stately home of Abercrombie on this
land. The history of the building is quite fascinating and very well explained
by the current owner, Richard Morgan. (I’ve heard that name before!) The
stately home has undergone extensive major restorations since 1969 when Richard’s
father bought the property. I have not visited any of the stately homes or
castles of the UK except for Edinburgh castle but I suspect this home was very
similar to those. Filled with antiques, fine art, collections and memorabilia
of the past owners it was nothing short of stunning. I could have spent hours
there but needed to be mindful of the fact that Rob would be waiting for me. Later
in the day, Rob and I did another interesting history walk around the centre of
Bathurst.
