We decided
to drive the 17 kms back to the town of Clermont this morning. We called into the
Post Office and also made a bakery stop. Before we left, Rob had been chatting
to a fellow caravanner (surprise, surprise) and he had asked us to buy a packet
of cigarettes for him. We really showed our ignorance as we asked the lady at
the checkout for the cigarettes. We knew the brand he wanted but there were 3 varieties
so we just guessed that! He had given Rob $50 but to buy one packet of
cigarettes…we couldn’t believe it. This didn’t even buy 40 cigarettes. We added
another $1.25 to it! I’ve never paid much attention to how the cigarette packs
look now and how ugly they are. Another
interesting thing we noticed was that the main pub in Clermont had
professionally made, large decals on the windows and doors that said “Start
Adani#”, a little different to the views expressed in other parts of Australia.
Being a coal-mining town in the middle of a pretty bad drought, it is clear what
people want here and that’s jobs. Anyway after this exercise we drove to the
Copperfield Chimney and to the remains of the town. I also had a quick look at
the old Copperfield Cemetery before we returned to Theresa Creek Dam. I was able to spend the afternoon kayaking
despite a pretty strong wind blowing. I enjoyed watching birds, kangaroos and
in particular a large group of feral pigs that were enjoying eating waterlilies
as they made their way along the bank. Returning to the shore, Rob had already
settled in having a drink with a lovely couple from Victoria who we had met
earlier in the day. I joined them for a well-earned drink.
