Many people
had told us about the fantastic Historic Village at Herberton and said that it
was a must visit so we decided to go there this morning. The village was just
amazing and we spent well over 3 hours exploring, learning and reminiscing about
the past. The village was spread over 16 acres and was just full of historical “stuff”.
I’ve decided that country people must never throw anything out and everything
is handed down and so the village was full of donations from the surrounding
areas. Many of the buildings were from nearby places and towns and had been relocated
to the village. The village was set around an existing mine and an old miners
hut. Of course there was a lot of historical mining artefacts as Herberton was
the centre of tin mining. The timber saw mill was very impressive too as was
the John Deer tractor collection, the old state school, the Chemist and the Toy
Shop. After this visit we had a bite to eat and went to the Herberton Mining
Museum which was included in our ticket. We enjoyed this smaller museum and
followed it by a short bush walk that took us through the Great Northern Mines.
Following this we went for a drive out to a beautiful lake, Lake Eacham which
is located in the middle of beautiful rainforest and is in an extinct volcano.
