Most of
today was spent driving the 380 kms to Cobbold Gorge. Although it wasn’t that
far it took us about 5 hours due to the road conditions. In some places the road
was the single lane bitumen road where you pull over to one side when you have
another oncoming vehicle and pull right off the road if it is a road train.
Other parts of the road were gravel and some of it heavily corrugated. We did
have 2 interesting stops on the way for coffee and lunch. I really enjoyed our
first stop at The “Gem Store” at Mt Surprise. We had heard about this place
from a man at the Herberton Mining Museum. He had explained that a lot of the
jewellery he had on display in the museum had come from a husband and wife team
in Mt Surprise. The husband cut and faceted the gems and the wife set the gems.
The Gem Shop/Post Office in Mt Surprise was their shop. I saw 2 beautiful rings
that I really liked. One had a single amethyst from near Cloncurry and the
other had several beautiful sapphires from the nearby lava fields, close to
Undara. Rob surprised me by saying “Get both”, so I did! We stopped at a small
town called Forsyth for lunch and there we saw an emu with 8 chicks strolling along
beside the road and then crossing it. This was quite a cute and comical sight.
We arrived at Cobbold Gorge Village, quickly settled in and then relaxed in the
infinity pool for the rest of the afternoon.
